This year I have been involved in the Tiverton Brass Project, a collaboration between The Tiverton Learning Community, myself and Keith Price, of HornBlowers. From February I have extended my East Devon range of wider opportunities (whole class) brass instrumental teaching to include five of the Tiverton LC schools, and I look forward to seeing these, as well as some of the others perform both at the Devon Mix Festival (23rd June, Westpoint Arena, Exeter) and at The Tiverton Jazz Ambassadors event (29th June, Two Moors School). I look forward to the posibility of returning to Sidmouth LC next year, and to starting to implement the course across the Exeter Central LC from September as well. To find out more about this, as well as help me by discussing next steps ensembles and carryon into KS3, visit the website, here.

I am very pleased to be running the junk music marquee this year at Devon's famous 'Mix Festival'. The event involves over six thousand children and young people, from all across the count, and with 90 places per 50 minute workshop, I look forward to working with approx 500-600 children that day! Good luck to the schools I currently work in who are performing brass as well, from the Exmouth, Exeter Central and Tiverton Learning Communities! You can make links to collaborate with any of the participatory schools, from my website.

I am very pleased to add mini-pans to the range of wider opportunities and workshop instruments which I offer. Mini-pans are an excellent choice for whole class instrumental teaching, as across KS1-2 they allow a class to fully explore the structures and textures of musical pieces, whilst also learning to play collaboratively, as soloists and to play melody, accompaniment, chords and rhythm on one easy to store instrument. I am delighted that so many of the schools I have re-booked for next academic year are considering mini-pans for their wider opps provision. Thanks to an excellent accompanying pack from DMS, the DCC mini-pans sets are very accessible, now you just need to book them...
Read the scheme description and details on the Mini-pans page.

What is 'Wider Opportunities? |

Much of the music work I do is based around the 'Wider Opportunities' initiative, but what is it, and how can you get some?
Trinity Guild Hall have what I think is the best explanation of this:
'Wider Opportunities evolved following the government’s Wider Entitlement pledge that ‘…over time, all pupils in primary schools who wish to, will have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument’. During the initial stages there was a variety of different models so the term ‘Whole Class Instrumental/Vocal Tuition’ was introduced to reflect both the ‘whole class’ approach & the acceptance of the voice as an instrument in its own right.
Wider Opportunities/Whole Class Instrumental/Vocal Tuition is usually first access to instrumental/vocal tuition for KS2 pupils.'

It's the National Year of Music! |

The DCSF state:
Tune In - Year of Music is a new national project from the Department for Children, Schools and Families, aiming to encourage children and young people across England (from birth to nineteen) to take part in more music-related activities.
The year begins in September 2009 and will run throughout the academic year 2009/10.
This year-long commitment will help deliver on a vital element of The Children's Plan - the cultural offer. The Department for Children, Schools and Families has made a commitment to invest £330m between 2008 and 2011 to improve music opportunities for more children.
Taking part in music, whether singing, playing an instrument, writing lyrics, dancing or working behind the scenes can inspire creativity, improve concentration skills, encourage motivation, determination and build social skills, life skills, and confidence.
The goal of Tune In - Year of Music is to spread the message that music should be an important factor in children and young people's lives, because participating in music-related activities can have positive impacts on a child or young person's development and personal fulfilment. On top of these benefits, it's fun.
England has a vibrant, world-renowned music industry, and a rich musical history. The Department for Children, Schools and Families aims to ensure that during this academic year, all children and young people in England have access to a mix of music-related opportunities, both in and out of school. From learning a musical instrument, to singing, to DJ-ing, to dancing, to composing, to producing, to enjoying a performance; there are countless ways to experience music.
As well as throwing music open to every child and young person in England, Tune In - Year of Music aims to celebrate the musical excellence shown by many English children and young people by supporting and inspiring the very talented to continue improving.
There are a wealth of organisations working to provide an exciting array of opportunities for children and young people to connect with music in all its forms. Tune In - Year of Music aims to encourage the music sector, and children and young people's culture sector, to unite around the Year of Music, maximising existing planned activity/campaigns and developing new activities in partnership.
A diverse mix of events and activities will be aggregated into an online calendar that children, young people, parents and carers can use to keep tabs on what's happening in their area. Join In >
Tune In - Year of Music is about encouraging and supporting interest and participation in experiences that could enhance a child or young person's life, both now and in the future.
And what's more, Ed Balls says:
Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families I really do hope that everyone will get involved in Tune In – Year of Music, because just like an orchestra, the sum of the parts will be far greater than any one section alone. Together we can drive children and young people's participation in music and dance.
Exclusive footage and images from Tune In - Year of Music will soon be available on the DCSF YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/dcsf and the DCSF Flickr album http://www.flickr.com/photos/dcsfgovuk
Surely there's never been a better time to get involved in music making in school - look around the music services on this site and see what I can offer you.
