The project is intended to be delivered as other wider opportunities projects, as a whole class, but later in smaller groups, forming 'bands' of which the teacher facilitates collaborative playing. The 'rock' pieces gradually progress in difficulty with increasingly challenging rhythms, chord patterns and singing. During the course, each band learns to improve on their chosen instrument, but work together, focusing on the quality of the collective sound. Reportoire is initially chosen to match the developing skill of the group, but later each band is encouraged to suggest pieces which interest them. The Instant Rock Band course focusses heavily on listening skills, and each new piece affords the pupils many opportunities to listen to pieces that interest them, and discuss their composition, structure and texture. Pupils grow to realise that even well known and seemingly casual music has a careful structure and skillfully organised texture.
